The big window and door glossary. Part 3: T to Ü

From T for door hinges to Ü for surveillance camera: Our glossary explains everything you need to know about doors and windows, including design, handles and other accessories. We make technical terms easy to understand.

DOORBANDS

Door hinges serve as a connecting piece between the door leaf and the frame. They are there to enable the door to be opened and closed by turning.

A door hinge consists of a hinge upper part, which is attached to the door leaf, a leaf lower part, which is attached to the door frame, and a pivot bolt, which connects both parts with each other. The pivot bolt allows the door to rotate.

Door hinges are found on the opposite side of the lock and strike plate. They offer the possibility of still aligning a door leaf to a limited extent in all three dimensions (side, height, pressure) when it is hung.

Door viewer

The door peephole is an element embedded in the door that allows someone to be seen in front of the door without opening the door. In the simplest case, the door viewer consists of a hole placed at eye level with a flap to close it. Modern door viewers have a wide-angle lens that greatly increases the angle of detection, allowing the occupant to see more of the area in front of the door. The lens also makes it difficult to see in from the outside.

In addition to classic door viewers, digital door viewers have now also become established.

You can find more information on the subject of door viewers on our blog in the article "Door viewer: The door with an eye".

A door frame serves to fix the door hinges and the door leaf. Depending on the type of frame, it can also cover the wall opening.

Door frames are usually made of wood or wood-based materials, steel or aluminium.

Surveillance camera / Doorcam

A surveillance camera - also called a doorcam - is a video camera that is mounted in front of or on a door or window to record what happens in its field of vision. The transmission can be live or time-delayed. Usually, surveillance cameras are connected to a monitor or wirelessly connected to a smartphone. There you can view and save the camera's recordings. Some cameras have a built-in motion detector so that the camera only records when it detects movement.

Please note that you may only use surveillance cameras on your own property and that only your own property may be visible on the recordings.  People in apartment buildings may not be filmed without their consent.
